Tamil movies are one of the most popular film industries in the world. The language spoken by the Tamil people is Tamil, which is considered to be one of the classical languages in India. There are many actors and actresses that have emerged from the industry since it opened in 1918. Here are an assortment of some of these actors and actresses: Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Vijaya Shanthi Pandian, Sridevi Kapoor, Parvati Melton, Mala Sinha. In the early days of Indian cinema, films were shown in theaters. Film theaters were often huge and grandiose with ornate architecture. The films themselves were also technically ingenious, since they had to be shown on a big screen for a large audience. During this time, films began to be shown frequently in movie theaters all over India. Audiences became enchanted with the magic of the moving image. In fact, it became so popular that by 1930 there were already two thousand film companies in India. In addition to this, thousands of films as well as different film techniques were being developed as well as numerous cinemas being built throughout the nation. Due to the high demand for film, it was hardly surprising that the time period during the early 1920s to the 1930s in India were known as the “Golden Age” of Indian Cinema. The golden age of Indian cinema was when South Indian movies began to be distributed internationally. The popular industries in Southern India were not limited to Tamil Nadu, but also Kerala and Karnataka. Their movies were actually dubbed in different languages like Hindi, English and other northern Indian languages like Punjabi and Gujarati. The golden age is particularly noted amongst Tamil movie enthusiasts owing to how much popularity this industry received both nationally and internationally. It was in the early 1920s when movies were being released in Tamil. Before this, no movies in Tamil were released in India. This is due to censorship laws that were established by British rulers that banned films that depicted scenes of violence or scenes of scenes that weren't somber or light-hearted. The golden age of Tamil cinema began with the launch of Thanjavur Cine Studios sometime around 1920. This studio produced shows for twenty years until 1944, when it was eventually purchased by Jayalakshmi Films and renamed as Jayalakshmi Studios. Jayalakshmi Studio produced approximately 10,000 movies between 1943 and 1961 until it was purchased by Gemini Studios in 1961. In 1948, the Government of Tamil Nadu enacted censorship laws which prohibited certain films from being shown in theaters. In 1951, the Government further restricted films to be shown in theaters by requiring theater owners to get a license. The government also enacted censorship laws during this period that prohibited public interest films and movies that were deemed "theatrical decadence". Soon after the enactment of these laws in India, South Indian moviegoers began to flock towards Hindi and Bollywood movies in order to view them since they were not prohibited in theaters. Due to these strict laws surrounding Tamil cinema, they continued to be absent from audiences until the 1960s when the industry recovered from sanctions over censorship policies. eccc085e13
